BCTO Education provides an inclusive space for instructors, with a focus on BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) individuals, to access affordable certification and continuing education. Our programs aim to normalize diverse participation in fitness, health, and wellness spaces while ensuring instructors gain comprehensive training to build on their foundational knowledge.
+ Our MissioN
Proceeds from this event will support BCTO Education, our initiative that provides scholarships and affordable training programs for aspiring BIPOC fitness instructors and marginalized community members. By participating, you're helping to break down barriers and create more opportunities for diverse voices in the health and wellness industry.
Despite Toronto being one of the most multicultural cities in the world, only 10-15% of instructors in most studios are people of colour. The reality is there’s a lack of representation, limited inclusive spaces, and unaffordable training opportunities for those who want to enter the industry. Without representation, it’s harder for communities to feel included in fitness and wellness spaces. Plus, with high training costs, many aspiring BIPOC instructors don’t have access to the education they need to break into the industry.
Ageism in the health and wellness industry is one example of marginalization. The Baby Boomer population is the largest generation to enter older adulthood in history. While 50% engage in regular physical activity, only 22% attend fitness classes or gyms. Movement is essential for healthy aging, reducing the risk of chronic disease and improving balance, flexibility, and cognition. Despite this, older adults—especially those pursuing careers in fitness—often face ageism and are underrepresented in instructor roles. Representation matters. When Baby Boomers lead classes, they challenge stereotypes, foster inclusivity, and inspire their peers to stay active. Elevating older instructors isn’t just about fitness; it’s about breaking barriers and ensuring all ages feel seen and valued.
Through BCTO Education, we are providing scholarships to make teacher training more accessible, expanding our programs to reach more aspiring instructors, and empowering the next generation of diverse fitness leaders to create a more inclusive wellness industry.
