Who’s version of safety is safe?
Opening this studio during the pandemic has had its challenges. The provincial guidelines have changed multiple times and so quickly that I have numerous versions of our safety measures. Of course, not a bad thing considering this virus has taught us that change is inevitable! But what has been most challenging is understanding and responding to what makes this BCTO Family and community feel safe enough to want to come move with us in person.
Everyone has a different version of “safe”. Wearing no mask during physical movement may feel liberating to some and horrifying for others. Is it enough to place the ownership on each individual? By not enforcing a measure taken by some businesses not required by our government, does it make us appear irresponsible or look negligent? Who’s version of safety is safe?
Working on cruise ships for over 10 years has ingrained safety as a number one priority in any operation. To this day I still push items on my shelf a “safe” distance from the edge in case it may fall over due to unexpected movement… of what you ask… I don’t know, but it’s “safe”! Clear exits, items stacked too high, trip hazards, fire safety, first-aid… always at the forefront of my thoughts. Creating a safe space IS my priority. Not just in a physical way, but mentally as well. The challenges of this pandemic have not only challenged our comfort levels, but it has also managed to infiltrate our nervous system. We have been in a constant state of not knowing. And perhaps there are no final answers. Information is and has constantly changed and what was “true” to begin in some cases has lost value along the way. Time has been our greatest teacher in my opinion. As more time passes, we learn from the past.
My approach is to trust my gut. My version of safe is going to be different from yours. I’m not always going to be right, that I know for sure. But I am going to follow our provincial guidelines and empower you to do what feels safe to you while you visit our space. If wearing a mask during your class feels safe, please wear it. The Toronto Barre Collective is all about inclusivity in all the ways. Our goal is to educate our community and create acceptance around not knowing but exploring through curiosity and inquiry. Maybe this is the first space in two years you feel comfortable enough to extend your boundaries. Showing up and moving in community is huge and it's enough.
Your version of safety is safe.
